Can You Have Too Many Tables?

It is once again Friday, which means that the week has come and gone here at the Bone Scroll. Sadly, I was not able to post as much as I would have liked as I was very busy this week. Even so, I was able to ponder upon a few things. The main one being, as Game Masters can we have enough tables?

So what do I mean by tables anyway? In this context, I'm talking about those tables that help us generate those random elements that we don't normally have time for. In a Trap in hurry, then roll on a trap table. Player ask you what color something is, roll on the color table. Need a smell, roll on the smell table. Of course, they could also be used as a list to pick things from. Generally, the tables I'm talking about generally amount to what some would call flavor text.

In that context, do I think Game Master will ever have enough tables? The short answer is no. Most Game Masters I know don't have a lot of time. This means that they are just not able to generate everything themselves. Even if you don't use them out right, a random table of something is a great place to get inspiration.

So what are some of my favorite tables? I have to say they are a list of 100 non-violent magic items from an issue of Dragon Magazine, the random treasure table in the first edition of Gama World, and just about every flavor table in the back of the AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide.

So do you think you can have too many tables? If so, why? If not, what are some of your favorite tables?
